Do you think World of Warcraft will ever go free to play? I think it would be great if it did. They are losing a lot of people because there are so many other mmos that can be played for free.

Quite interesting thread.

I don't think it ever changes to a free game, either it stays up with required payment like this, or it will end of closing because they lost million of players = payment lose, which means they don't have the resources to keep it up, however if blizzard are noticing that it goes slighty (like fast down) they will probably change something big to avoid it to happen, but sure it'll end up closing sometime in the future.

Another option that I thought of is if they do realise that they cannot revive up the population and it goes under 1-5K subs they probably consider it and try to find another way of it that they earn from, (donations or whatever)

But honestly, I'm not sure myself.

No, WoW has their ways and they aren't going to change it. They currently have about 7.8 Mil subscribers atm, and WOD coming out it will def rise A LOT. They update every month(patch wise), to make people come back, see the new changes. That is why WoW will not go dead anytime soon, they realize MOP brought the pop down, so they are recreating WOTLK, (the most loved patch), in WOD.

WoW will probably never go free, if they do, where will they get money from, also remember that Blizzard has to pay the workers aswell

Wait for WoD guys, and watch the population grow :)

I actually heard from a friend who plays WoW, that it will go free with the release of Warlords of Draenor. Then the idea is to sell more vanity items. Wether or not it actually turns out that way, I can't say. If it is, they'll lose a lot of monthly revenue, but the extra amount of new players could perhaps bring in a bit in online sales. But more members usually mean bigger servers, which again ends out in higher costs. So I got my doubts.

Quite interesting, I cannot imagine it happening and specially not already in WoD but you never know, blizzard can suprise you.. I guess
Btw, you know how your friend knows this? An article he found on the internet or?

I can see it offering some free to play parts but to make it a really good game to play they will still keep it subscription base.

I think WoW will eventually become F2P, but not anytime soon. I hope it does though.

Sadly I have no idea. But the poster just above me got a link to an article about the same, so that could be one way he found out.

Wow will never go free to play as long as they have steady subscriptions coming in. People will always pay for it even when they don't play it. That's where most of their money is made believe it or not

I think it will eventually become free to play in an effort to snuff out private servers, but they will use the store system to buy over powered mounts, gear, weapons, bonuses, and just about anything else they can sell to keep revenue.

If it does go truly F2P (no paid subscriptions at all), I doubt they'll be able to raise enough revenue from WoW alone to pay for all the servers and stuff. Having paid items and stuff wouldn't be quite enough without shrinking the dev/staff teams and/or adding ads. But idk.
