Could be your anti-virus or firewall blocking the connection. Depending on what firewall and anti-virus you have, look up ways to allow WoW through them, and hopefully there shouldn't be a problem.

However, every now and then, after first starting up the server, something will bug out and it will appear to be fine, but it basically does what you just described.
I'm not sure if it's went back to the menu or not, I usually click 'Cancel' when it's been on "Connected" for too long.
