In a previous post I made (here) I thought of an idea for EmuCoach to have a fantasy/rpg/something similar game that can be played on the website. So basically, someone would come to the site, and click a tab on the top of the forums called whatever the game's name is, and they would be taken to it to play it.
Either that, or it would be downloaded, and hopefully online for obvious reasons of connecting with the community.
I feel like this could help people stay on the site, as they could have a fun little game to compete with other members of the community.

I believe something like this can be done in Java, and I feel that I know enough of the language to start work on it now. Once I finish this summer semester, I should know how to write GUI's in Java, which is when I could finish work on it.

This is kind of a suggestion, while also coding discussion, along with general discussion because I want to know what other people think.
What do you guys think of this idea? Especially ExO, since I'd like this to be an official game of EmuCoach.

I would love to work on this, and hope that other people would aswell. Is anyone up for it? It'd probably start out real simple, and I'd probably end up doing most of the early work (I say that now, but once I start it I'll probably learn how hard it'd actually be). I know that I'd need help later on, especially with making it online, and possibly having it hosted on an HTML webpage.
I'd probably release the game as open source as well, since I don't really see why other people shouldn't have access to it (that is, if the game doesn't suck).
I'm not a professional in Java, and the help I need might not entirely be in Java, so anyone that could contribute to this, I'd greatly appreciate your help.

I want to remind anyone who does want to join in though, that I am in no way a professional when it comes to this stuff. I'm new to Java, and I haven't even started learning other stuff yet. Also, if you think this project can't be done until I learn more (which is quite possible), then that's no problem, as I don't mind working on this for a long time.

Features of the game (for now):
  • Some form of combat between the player and some random monsters in different locations
  • Different locations to travel to for different things
  • Shops
  • To go with the shops, that would include some kind of online market, for people to sell their items to other players
  • Dueling between players (if the player is offline, then it would be something similar to an automated bot)
  • Forts (Similar to garrisons in World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor) - meaning people can raid other forts, and you can make your fort stronger.
  • If possible, rewards in the game for things achieved on the site
  • If the above is possible, then I'd like to link the accounts on the game with the accounts on the website, so to play the game, you'd have to register an account on the forums, and you can earn rewards by posting, recieving X amount of rep, etc
  • Some kind of farming (more so inside the forts) that lets you farm food, ingredients, sellable items, etc
  • Potion making that can be used in battle to give the player either health, stamina, a special attack, etc
  • Something that should've been obvious from the start: Quests. The player could kill a certain amount of mobs, get an item from a mob, etc.
As for animations for fighting and for the GUI and all that, I'm not too sure about yet. For now, I'd like to get the base game. After that, I might hand over the project to someone who knows how to add in sprites and animations and all that, etc, or I'd work with them, whatever. Either way, I'd love to have something like this, and to be a part of it's development.
What do you guys think? And, would anyone else be interested?

EDIT: I'm trying to get my friend on board. He's at a different college for a specific degree in Game Design, so he might be able to help as well.

EDIT 2: Turns out, I've got 2 friends that can help; the friend I referred to in the first edit can help with sprites, while the 2nd friend can help with Java or coding ideas/advice, although he most likely knows less than I do, but he goes to a different college so he might have different techniques, etc.

EDIT 3: Added a few more suggestions. I'd also like to point out that this would be more of a click-based game. Something similar to the old 'Adventure Quest' game. I hope that's considered a 2d game, and that I didn't get the title wrong :/ But it'd be that way, at least to start out, and then it would turn into an actual 2d game that you can move around with using the arrow keys.
If you don't know what adventure quest is, then here is a picture of one of the combat scenes:

You can install an arcade system for the forums that include many games and high scores.

Yes but I'm talking about an EmuCoach specific game. Something that's not a generic game, and something that people can actually benefit from being active in the forums by being rewarded in the game. That part is probably the hardest, but I have a feeling someone knows how to do it.
I've tried the arcade game addon before in one of my previous sites, and I didn't much care for it. I found myself barely using it, and the same with the members.
Nor did it increase the community, not a single person signed up thinking "I can't wait to play Pac-Man on (website name here)"
Sorry if that sounds sarcastic, as I promise it's not meant to be at all, I'm just trying to get my point accross that this game idea I have is meant to increase the site's members and community.

I also understand that you can probably add your own games to the arcade system, but I don't think they would have the same effect. Or maybe this game, if we create it, could be implemented to the site through the arcade system, but it wouldn't feel right with that.

I hate to bump, and have two posts in a row, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for the game? Or if anyone wants to help?
I need help for a name as well.

Still waiting on ExO to see if it would be an official part of EmuCoach or not though.

I should be learning GUI's next week so I can start work on it relatively soon.

First of all, I would like to say good job, it's an interesting project, however let me refer it to the forums;
It's a tough one, the idea and the intention is good, but is the interest from the community also willing to play this?

It would be unfortunate to develop this further if the community is not interested in this, and honestly I could suspect that being the case because most of the members lurking around on the forums will need wow tools, and play MMORPG/wow-ish games, and while this being another game theme, I am not so sure myself. Especially not if they would have to download the game etc, because I could imagine it being hard to encourage players to download and play it, if the interest is not there for such a game type.

This is not a reply to close down the idea, it is just a reply with the concerns that may follow for such a suggestion.

Well I was hoping to be able to get the client on the website, like people would with RsPs clients, that way you don't have to download anything, just go to the link and play, but I've no idea how to do that, and it'd have to be online first, which is the biggest challenge for me. I understand the caution for if the community wouldn't want to play it, and thats one reason I've already changed the idea of how it will look a couple of times.

Also, unless I can get a name for it, I was hoping to use EmuCoach in the name of it. Something simple like "EmuCoach 2d Game".
With that, it wont mean it's official or anything, but that way if I post it here if it's completed, people will know it's for this website, etc, then if it gets popular it could be made official for real.

I do doubt that it would get popular, but I would still love to develop the game, even if not a single person likes it, because it would be my first big Java project.
